What Drives Paulanne's Opinion
Many people believe theater critics merely share their opinions about the shows they see. While to some extent this is true, a good critic shares not only her opinion but also her knowledge. That means an opinion should be backed by criteria. What were the playwright’s goals? Does the writing fulfill those goals? Does the production live up to the expectations set by the playwright? Do all the actors make the characters live onstage and give them an existence beyond the stage? Do all the elements (scenic design, costumes, lighting, sound) work well together? Do they enhance the play? The answers to these questions are what determines the value of the theatrical experience.
